The Next Big Thing Caterpillars New 7495

Formation recently collaborated with with Caterpillar’s electric rope shovel team and Steve Casey of Ergonomics Systems Design on the development of the new Cat 7495.

The Caterpillar 7495 is an extremely large and highly specialized excavator. Weighing in at over 1,300 tons it’s is one of the largest and most advanced pieces of earth moving equipment ever created. The 7495 is capable of moving over 100 tons of material per pass. This capacity combined with electric drive and dig systems results in extremely efficient operation. Formation contributed to the development of the big Cat’s new operator-centric cab and control system. Designed for efficiency and crew comfort, the cab’s isolated operator station, glass cockpit and optimized sight lines afford unprecedented comfort, control and productivity. Amenities include fully customizable joystick controls, multi-screen 360° remote vision systems, a kitchen complete with refrigerator, coffee maker and microwave, lavatory, trainer seat, observer seat and ample equipment storage.

The development of the 7495’s cab and control systems were the culmination of a user centered design process that included contextual research and workshops with more than 80 miners from Africa, Asia, Europe, North and South America. The development process was featured in the November 2012 issue of Industrial Vehicle Technology (IVT). For more information, please download the PDF case study or visit IVT’s website. The 7495 is currently in production and available from Caterpillar.

NCR Recognized With an International Design Excellence Award

The industrial design of the new 30 Series Terminal for Atlanta based NCR Corporation was recognized with an Industrial Designers Society of America, International Design Excellence Award (IDEA). The IDEAs are presented by the Industrial Designers Society of America in association with the Henry Ford Museum, Core77 and Curve Magazine. They represent one of the highest honors for product developers and the Industrial Design profession.

Formation had the pleasure of working with a world class group of NCR’s product managers, engineers and senior managers to develop the new 30 Series terminal. Our central challenge was to develop a space-efficient platform and new line language suitable for commercial use and capable of scaling with the addition of accessories. By considering the entire platform at the outset of the project the design team was able to plan for a broad range of potential applications and implementations. The system is a true 360° product intended to be viewed from all sides. It appears integrated, balanced and intentional across a multitude of potential configurations.

For more on the development of the New 30 Series please watch the video or contact Formation Design Group.

Georgia Tech, Formation and the Next Generation of Designers

Formation was pleased to participate in “Designing the World Around You” an Industrial Design summer camp for aspiring designers at Georgia Tech. Faculty from Georgia Tech in conjunction with The Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics and Computing, CEISMC (pronounced “seismic”), hosted a large group of middle school students for a week long Industrial Design camp.

Energetically lead by GT design instructor Raja Schaar, young designers worked in teams to explore how and why everyday objects are made. From there they carried out their own hands-on design projects culminating in group presentations.

Formation participated by presenting a range of completed projects to illustrate the diverse array of products and industries that benefit from Industrial Design. Although the design process is relatively consistent the range of potential design careers is almost limitless.

With the exception of an aggressive line of questioning from a middle-school student regarding ‘exactly how much money designers make”, we managed to make it through our presentation unscathed. Hopefully, we had a positive influence on the next generation Georgia Tech Industrial Designers.

Congratulations Suzuko + Team!

As the name implies, film racing is a contest in which competitors are given an assigned theme and constraints that must be included in an original short film. Teams take films from script to completion in a dizzying 24 hours.

Serving as art director, Formation Designer Suzuko Hisata and her team scripted, staged, shot and edited a short film for the 2011 24 Hour Film Race. The film entitled “Running” is based on the assigned theme of identity theft.  The film introduces a level of abstraction and cleverly turns the notion of identity theft on its head by creating a character without an identity. Running and other films can be viewed online.

Running was recognized as one of the standout films for 2011 and garnered a host of awards, including:

• Best Cinematography – Overall Awards 2011

• Best Direction – Atlanta 2011

• Best Actor – Atlanta 2011

• Best Actress – Atlanta 2011

• Best Cinematography – Atlanta 2011

• Best Editing – Atlanta 2011

• Best Sound Design – Atlanta 2011

• Best Set Design – Atlanta 2011

• Best Visual FX – Atlanta 2011

Enough Design to Fill a Postal Code

Formation recently attended the annual NeoCon trade show. NeoCon is North America’s largest design exposition and conference for the commercial, hospitality, healthcare and retail interiors industry.

Each year Chicago’s Merchandise Mart hosts more than 40,000 NeoCon attendees. To say it’s a big show is an understatement. When it first opened in 1930 the Merchandise Mart was the largest building in the world and needed its own zip code. Today every floor is packed with the best contract furniture the industry has to offer.
