The ESR 5000 Series Reach Truck Wins Gold
The industrial design of the ESR 5000 for Ohio based Crown Equipment Corporation was recently recognized with a Fast Company – Industrial Designers Society of America, Gold International Design Excellence Award (IDEA). The IDEA’s are presented by the Industrial Designers Society of America in association with Fast Company Magazine and represent one of the profession’s highest honors. Please visit Fast Company’s website for the entire story.

The ESR 5000 Series is a full range of electric, side-sit reach trucks that achieve new levels of productivity, comfort and robustness for warehouses and distribution centers. A new super-duty mast can now lift a fully loaded pallet up to 12 meters (39.4 feet) high. All models offer a low step for easy on/off, and fully adjustable seating and controls for operators. The all-new new S-Class vehicle establishes a new benchmark in operator comfort with a 30º rotating MoveSeat and a FlexBack reclining seat. The new, patented battery shape provides 40% more legroom, and the MoveSeat reduces upper body twisting. A patented angled overhead guard also increases upward visibility.

2010 IDEA Juror Isabel Ancona noted the following regarding the design of the ESR 5000
“Strong product strategy and user research, combined with elegant and practical design solutions, has created a very accessible and effective vehicle. There are several details that demonstrate a solid understanding of the various workflows and user needs–creating a safe and usable ‘workspace’ for the driver, providing more visibility, simple user interface controls, and visual cues on the truck for safer driving. I’m just sorry we didn’t get to try it out…looks fun to drive!”

The Industrial Designers Society of America recently published a summary of IDSA Business Week International Design Excellence Award winners from 2004 to 2009. We were pleased to see that our relatively small group was ranked among perennial industry leaders such as IDEO and Pentagram. Although awards aren’t the only measure of a firm’s capabilities, they do represent a history of innovation and world class design.

Formation Honored With Business Week IDEA Award!

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

We are pleased to announce that Formation Design Group has been honored with a 2007 Business Week – Industrial Designers Society of America Industrial Design Excellence Award for the design of the Organ Recovery Systems – Lifeport Liver Workstation.

The LifePort Liver Workstation is a clinical medical system that provides rehabilitative therapy and diagnostics for human pancreata, kidneys, lungs and hearts making it the most flexible and advanced human organ recovery system in existence.

Creating a flexible platform for use with multiple organ types required Formation to work closely with surgeons to understand the specific needs of each procedure. All aspects of the organ procurement process, from recovery to transplant, were considered during a co-design process carried out with leading transplant surgeons and researchers from the United States and Europe.

The design of the resulting medical system was recognized with a IDEA Award in 2006. In addition to providing research, industrial design and engineering services, Formation also manufactured the first six units.

Translated From German –

Crown Equipment received the red dot: best of the best for the design of the TSP 6000 series, awarded by an international expert jury in this year’s competition red dot award: product design. In cooperation with the Formation Design Group, the company developed a vehicle with a combination of well-conceived functionality and a high-quality design.

With the Crown TSP 6000 series, the US company offers a practical solution to optimise the workflow and to increase productivity. The high rack commissioner unites future-oriented design with highest operator efficiency. A 110° rotary, height adjustable seat can assume five different positions and offers flexible working on the highest level.

To develop the TSP 6000 the operating movements of the best operators were analysed and on this basis an optimised vehicle was designed. Its innovations support all operating processes optimally. The material used is stable, durable and resilient; it was developed in accordance with the standards of the most modern vehicle design. The use of highly developed technologies offers high tech in warehouses.

The multi-functional product developed by Crown engineers and the high-grade look created by designers of the Formation Design Group impressed this year’s red dot jury and was awarded the red dot: best of the best in the category traffic, together with only two other products in the same category. Formation Receives Business Week IDEA Award!

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

We are pleased to announce that Formation Design Group has been honored with a 2006 Business Week – Industrial Designers Society of America Industrial Design Excellence Award for the design of the Safe-Vent Syringe.
It is estimated that between 600,000 – 800,000 needle stick injuries occur annually. Each year 18,000 health care workers are infected with Hepatitis, HIV and other blood-borne diseases. The Safe-Vent arterial syringe venting system was created to address this problem.

Safe-Vent syringes reduce the technician’s risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens by allowing them to safely vent gas bubbles from an arterial blood sample. In addition to providing a safer procedure, the Safe-Vent captures the needle in fewer steps than current systems. Only one hand is needed to engage the needle safety device and vent the sample. Today’s leading systems require two-handed operation. Because it reduces the sample’s exposure to ambient air, Safe-Vent also contributes to more accurate diagnoses.

I.D. Magazine Award

Thursday, July 1st, 2004

In addition to its recent Industrial Designers Society of America Silver IDEA Award, the industrial design of the Crown PE 4000 was also recognized with an ID magazine award.

The PE 4000 was featured in the 2004 ID Magazine Annual Design Review.

The Formation design Team collaborated closely with Crown (and even worked as pallet truck operators for a week) to raise the ergonomic bar of this warehouse lift truck. Crown is a perennial winner in this category because it continues to heap improvements on its products. The truck’s standing platform is made of a new polyurethane foam and the designers replaces the standard plastic kneepads with molded rubber. “The truck is beautiful and who wouldn’t want to use it?” asked jurist Dziersk. Penney appreciated the practical elements: cleanable surfaces and easy access to the internal components. Said Siegal,” this company has so integrated design into its being that any product they make will look good”.
