People’s Choice Award – Thanks Everyone!

Thursday, August 14th, 2014

People'sChoice_001

We’d like to thank everyone who voted for the 2014 IDSA People’s Choice Award! In addition to receiving a GOLD International Design Excellence Award, the DELTAIR S.C.B.A. also won the 2014 People’s Choice Award!

The People’s Choice Award is voted on annually by IDSA members and affiliates through online balloting on the IDSA’s website. It’s presented each year at the IDSA’s national conference. The award allows designers and the general public to select their favorite project from all the IDEA Gold winners. Although we were honored to receive a GOLD award this year, the People’s Choice Award is something extra special indeed! We are flattered and delighted that our project for AVON Protection was selected from such a strong field of International Design Excellence Award winners.

The DELTAIR Self Contained Breathing Apparatus is a life-sustaining breathing system for firefighters. During contextual work sessions, we collaborated with 38 active duty firefighters from 9 departments across the U.S to design the best SCBA possible. It was truly a co-design effort resulting in a S.C.B.A. system designed by firefighters for firefighters! We believe we owe our People’s Choice Award to the fact that people understand the importance of good design and usability in products intended for first responders. After all, they put themselves in harm’s way for the sake of others.

Thanks everyone! But really, this is too much!

Avon Formation Industrial Design Excellence Award

The research and design of AVON’s new SCBA was recognized with a GOLD Industrial Designers Society of America, International Design Excellence Award (IDEA). Started in 1980, the IDEA program fosters business and public understanding regarding the impact of industrial design excellence and represents one of the most coveted and prestigious design industry awards.

Formation worked with AVON Protection’s product managers, engineers and marketing specialists to research and design the new DELTAIR Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (S.C.B.A.). The development of the Deltair system was planned to coincide with the introduction of new regulations governing firefighter SCBAs. The goal of the project was to use the new regulations, along with input from end users to develop the world’s best breathing system for firefighters.

SCBAs are used in extremely harsh conditions by professionals under tremendous physical and mental stress. The life-sustaining nature of the product and its extreme use context presented the development team with many challenges. Most significant was the fact that no one on the design team had or could ever have first-hand experience using a SCBA in a real world, life-threatening situation. Because of this, the development of the Deltair system was conceived as a co-design project involving seasoned firefighters. During contextual work sessions, the design team collaborated with 38 active duty firefighters from 9 departments across the U.S to design the best SCBA possible.

NCR Recognized With an International Design Excellence Award

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

The industrial design of the new 30 Series Terminal for Atlanta based NCR Corporation was recognized with an Industrial Designers Society of America, International Design Excellence Award (IDEA). The IDEAs are presented by the Industrial Designers Society of America in association with the Henry Ford Museum, Core77 and Curve Magazine. They represent one of the highest honors for product developers and the Industrial Design profession.

Formation had the pleasure of working with a world class group of NCR’s product managers, engineers and senior managers to develop the new 30 Series terminal. Our central challenge was to develop a space-efficient platform and new line language suitable for commercial use and capable of scaling with the addition of accessories. By considering the entire platform at the outset of the project the design team was able to plan for a broad range of potential applications and implementations. The system is a true 360° product intended to be viewed from all sides. It appears integrated, balanced and intentional across a multitude of potential configurations.

For more on the development of the New 30 Series please watch the video or contact Formation Design Group.

As the name implies, film racing is a contest in which competitors are given an assigned theme and constraints that must be included in an original short film. Teams take films from script to completion in a dizzying 24 hours.

Serving as art director, Formation Designer Suzuko Hisata and her team scripted, staged, shot and edited a short film for the 2011 24 Hour Film Race. The film entitled “Running” is based on the assigned theme of identity theft.  The film introduces a level of abstraction and cleverly turns the notion of identity theft on its head by creating a character without an identity. Running and other films can be viewed online.

Running was recognized as one of the standout films for 2011 and garnered a host of awards, including:

• Best Cinematography – Overall Awards 2011

• Best Direction – Atlanta 2011

• Best Actor – Atlanta 2011

• Best Actress – Atlanta 2011

• Best Cinematography – Atlanta 2011

• Best Editing – Atlanta 2011

• Best Sound Design – Atlanta 2011

• Best Set Design – Atlanta 2011

• Best Visual FX – Atlanta 2011

48 Hour Repack – Not Everyone Gets a Trophy!

Tuesday, April 10th, 2012

Congratulations to the winners of the 2012 48 Hour Re-Pack student packaging design competition!

The 2012 competition was the third installment of an annual student design competition carried out in conjunction with the NextPack packaging conference. Sponsored by the Institute of Packaging Professionals, the 48 Hour Re-Pack competition encourages creative problem-solving, sustainable and smart design for the packaging of everyday products. Student teams were presented with product categories and judging criteria then given 48 hours to redesign, prototype and produce a short video showcasing their solution. With more than 35 teams participating this year’s competition was better than ever!

Of course not everyone gets a trophy… Formation Design Group was pleased to support this year’s student competitors by designing and creating trophies for the top three finalists. The trophies embody the Institute of Packaging Professionals identity by referencing the form and color of their logo. The trophies were created using aluminum, plastic and paperboard – all common packaging materials.

Formation Aircraft Seating Patent Granted!

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

On February 21, 2012 the United States patent office granted US 8,118,365 B2 covering the original Formation Aircraft Seating concept invented by Formation Partner, Robert Henshaw.

The concept allows a much greater number of lie flat seats to be installed in aircraft than the current state of the art without compromising seat or bed size. The seating arrangement utilizes some of the unused vertical space in the cabin to overlap parts of the lie flat beds. Formation continues to explore and develop the concept based on this patent and has filed for additional patent protection on derivative concepts including a version that maintains the upright take-off and landing position of all seats at the standard height from the floor. More information regarding this development will be made public in the coming months.

Buzzy Receives Medical Design Excellence Award!

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

In its April issue, published this week, Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry (MD+DI) magazine announced the winners of the fourteenth annual Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) competition.

The Medical Design Excellence Awards are the premier awards program for the medical technology community. The award recognizes the achievements of medical device manufacturers, their suppliers, and the many people behind the scenes—engineers, scientists, designers, and clinicians—who are responsible for the groundbreaking innovations that are changing the face of healthcare. MDEA-winning entries excel in the areas of product innovation, design and engineering achievement, end-user benefit, and cost-effectiveness in manufacturing and healthcare delivery.

A comprehensive review of the entries was performed by an impartial, multidisciplinary panel of third-party jurors with expertise in biomedical engineering, human factors, industrial design, medicine, and diagnostics. The 2011 jury selected 37 winners in 10 medical product categories including the Buzzy needle pain relief system.

Manufactured by MMJ Labs LLC , Buzzy combines a unique ice pack and reusable vibrating bee-shaped device to numb sharp pain. When pressed proximal to a painful procedure, Buzzy uses gate theory and descending inhibition to diminish and physiologically block pain. Supply and design credit to Formation Design Group Inc.
